AIMING AT CLOUD AND IOT, AMAZON ACQUIRED THE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE COMPANY
This deal was taken place from autumn 2015, but Amazon has never announced to the public.
Recently,
Google's artificial intelligence program has won against the champion Lee
Se-dol from Korea. This victory is the challenge of Google to its competitors.
The
big guns in the industry, such as Amazon, Google, IBM and Microsoft have long
entered this race to become the company controlling artificial intelligence.
"Platform"
in technology can be understood simply as a kind of operating system. Creating
an operating system means earning huge profits.
If
those who believe in artificial intelligence are right about the promising
future of it, the companies that can control artificial intelligence will
definitely become the leaders in the coming years.
According
to a source, Amazon has recently acquired Orbeus, a startup of AI, one of the efforts to conquer the cloud computing and smart devices market
of the e-commerce giant.
Representatives
from Amazon and Orbeus, including CEO Yi Li, declined to comment. This
startup's domain name (orbe.us) is also owned by Amazon Hostmaster of Amazon
Technologies Inc., a tributary of Amazon.
Orbeus
developed image recognition technology based on artificial neural AI named ReKognition. It had the
ability to sort and identify content on photos added by users. Orbeus's
PhotoTime application which used this technology was launched before Google
launched the Photos app based on AI.
PhotoTime could analyze the data and read the pixels to get to know the details
of the image like the way human eyes see things.
On
its website, Orbeus said API of ReKognition had no longer received new customers,
but it was currently preparing to launch what was equally interesting.
Amazon
is actively investing in AI
technology to automate warehousing operation system, improve freight efficiency
and introducing new products for its cloud platform Amazon Web Services. Like
the popular CEOs Elon Musk or Larry Page, Amazon's CEO Jeff Bezos loves
technology products which can think for him. Last month, he also held a
reception to experts in robotics and machine learning in Palm Springs,
California.
Some
startups also applied artificial nervous system of AI in image recognition technology and other activities including
Clarifai Inc. and MetaMind.
The
big technology companies are very interested in this segment as well as other
aspects of AI. Salesforce announced it
had bought MetaMind while Apple also said it had acquired Emotient startup
specializing in facial recognition technology in January this year.
